INDUSTRY OUTLOOK
India is one of the largest textile producers in the world. The textile sector accounts for around 14% of industrial production in India and contributes around 4% to Gross Domestic Product. The textile sector is one of the largest employment-giving sectors of India. The Textile industry is widely varied with hand-spun and hand-woven textiles sectors at one end of the spectrum and large mills at the other end.
The textiles and apparel exports from India form 11% of mercantile shipments in FY 2020. Cotton production in India reached 36.04 million bales in FY 2020. India is the second largest producer of cotton accounting for 25% of the global cotton area and 18% of global cotton production.
In April 2021, the Government of India announced that the PLI scheme will very soon be introduced to the textile sector. It is expected that Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh will be the new major garment manufacturing center. The Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) will be providing up to 4 acres of land for the construction of the factory. The government of India is working to boost and improve the textile industry of India. The future of the Indian Textile industry is promising.
