The electronics industry is one of the fastest-growing across the world, set to reach US$ 7.3 trillion by 2025. The electronics market valued at $118 billion in 2020 is segmented as Mobile Phones (24%), Consumer Electronics (22%), Strategic Electronics (12%), Computer Hardware (7%), LEDs (2%), and Industrial Electronics (34%) comprising of Auto, Medical and other industrial electronic products.
Domestic electronics production grows over 2.5 times in 5 years; from $29 billion (2014) to $75.7 billion (2019-2020). The domestic Electronic Components market in India for 2019 was $20.8 billion (excluding imported PCB-Assemblies). Digital Transactions per capita per annum have increased up to 10 times in 5 years. India is a global R&D destination, with 1140+ R&D Centers of MNCs in India employing 9,00,000+ professionals
Of the total electronics demand in India, around 50% is fulfilled by imports and 16% is exported of the total local electronics production. The government of India is very keen to reduce electronics imports by initiatives like Make in India and the Digital India programs to encourage domestic manufacturing and exports across the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) value chain, aiming to achieve a market size of US$ 251 billion by 2023.
Various schemes have been launched by the government in order to position India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) such as Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for IT Hardware, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters Scheme (EMC 2.0)
With the rising manufacturing costs in other economies and the increasing labor costs in China, coupled with rising tension between the USA and China, global organizations are expected to shift their units from China to India and other European countries to serve domestic and global demand.
